Mick Mills took charge at Stoke City in the year 1985 and attempted to lift the club back into o the top flight. His first two season in charge at the club saw the Potters finish off the campaigns occupying a top ten finish on both occasions as they came close to securing a birth in the elusive play off competition. They were unfortunate to crash out of the fifth round of the FA Cup in 1987 as the eventual winners, Coventry City, defeated them in the last sixteen of the cup competition.

The 1987 – 1988 campaign saw Stoke City finish off in 11th place, they also reached the last sixteen of the league cup, however suffered defeat agai9nmst eventual finalists, Arsenal, as they suffered a 3-0 defeat.
The 1989 – 1990 season saw the arrival of Alan Ball in charge at the club, however even he could not prevent Stoke City from suffering a bottom position finish of 24th position at the end of the 1989 – 90 campaign to condemn the club to third division football.
The 1989 – 1990 Stoke City side included players like, Peter Fox, John Butler, Cliff Carr, Carl Beeston, Noel Blake, George Barry, Gary Hackett, Tony Ellis, David Kevan, Wayne Biggins and Lee Sandford.
