Alan Durban guided Stoke City to an impressive 11th position finish in the first division at the end of the 1980 -1981 season as he stepped down as manager at the club and Richie Braker took charge at Stoke in 1981. During his two years at the club, Stoke plummeted down the table during the 1981 – 1982 season to a disappointing 18th position finish, however regained their composure during the 1982 – 1983 season in finishing it off in 13th position. They reached the fourth round of the FA cup in the 1983 – 1984 season only suffering a 2-0 defeat against the mighty Liverpool. Bill Aspery took charge at Stoke in 1984 as the Potters struggled to relegation at the end of the 1984 – 1985 campaign, finishing it off in 22nd position, departing form the second division.
