Tony Waddington took charge at the club in 1960 and saw his Stoke side struggle in the second division during his first year in charge to a disappointing 18th position. Everything became good for Stoke City FC during the 1962 – 1963 season as they finished it off being crowned as second division champions at the end of the season. They enjoyed a great run in the league cup during the 1963 – 1964 season as they suffered elimination after defeat against Leicester City FC in the final of the competition. They established themselves as a force in the top flight during the mid 1960’s and signed Gordon Banks, who came from Leicester City. During his time at the club, Banks won 36 of his 73 England caps while playing in goal for Stoke City.
The Potters enjoyed a fine season during the 1969 – 1970 campaign as they finished it off in a very strong ninth position finish at the end of the term. They crashed out of the FA cup in the fourth round as they suffered defeat against Watford FC.
